Drop D tuner

Play each string near the microphone and the needle shows whether it's sharp, flat or in tune. Tuning: D A D G B E.

How to tune with the microphone

  1. Press “Listen to my instrument” and allow microphone access.
  2. Play one string and let it ring. If the needle goes left, the string is flat: tighten it a little. If it goes right, it's sharp: loosen it. When the needle turns green in the centre, it's in tune.
  3. The string you're playing lights up, so you always know which one you're on.

The sound is analysed on your own device: nothing is recorded or sent anywhere.

Notes of each string

Like standard tuning, but with the 6th string lowered a whole step: D2, A2, D3, G3, B3 and E4. It lets you play power chords with one finger on the three lowest strings. Tip: the open 6th string should sound one octave below the 4th.

Without a microphone

Press each reference note and adjust the string by ear until both sound the same, with no beating (the “wah-wah” you hear when they're almost equal).

Frequently asked questions

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Open it in your phone or tablet browser, allow the microphone and play close to the device. Nothing to install.

440 or 442 Hz?

The standard is A = 440 Hz. Many orchestras and bands tune to 442 Hz: choose your ensemble's reference.

The needle jumps around, what should I do?

Play one string at a time, let it ring and move away from noise. For very low notes, try the 12th-fret harmonic.
